Testing Franco-Venetian literature through AI (ChatGPT 3.5 and Gemini)

This contribution arises in the aftermath of the Sapienza conference on the relations between philological knowledge and the resources offered by OpenAI AI software. Through the article, the philological potential of chatbots—ChatGPT and Gemini—was examined in the analysis of medieval epic texts. Specifically, the study focused on selected Franco-Venetian excerpts dating from the 13th to the 14th centuries, where Old French is interwoven with elements from northern Italian koiné. The investigation explored the tools' actual capabilities in translation and linguistic commentary, as well as in a theoretical context. The conclusions attempt to outline the current state of software development and its application in the field of philology.
